Synopsis

Set on the floating islands that make up Aethera, Dragon Hearts: A Daughter's Promise is an RPG in which you take control of Isacaiah, a young girl who promised her parents to seal an ancient, mystical crystal. Unfortunately, the crystal was stolen, so she has to venture out and retrieve it first. She will give it her all to get that crystal back and fulfill her duty. It was a promise, after all...

Dragon Hearts: A Daughter's Promise is a short (1-2 hours) rpg featuring a linear story and turn based battles in which you use various skills to defeat your enemies. There is not much in the way of unique features, except for the minor wrinkle that you will be running with a party of one for the majority of the game. The game is not intended to be difficult, but be careful: game overs will happen if you overextend and run out of MP at a bad time.

Characters

Isacaiah

A 12 year old girl, and the protagonist of the story. Despite her age, she has an incredibly strong sense of responsibility, and is not very keen on asking others to help fix her own problems.

Gondroch

The antagonist who has stolen the crystal. He is a bit of a nut case and has illusions of grandeur, but his magic is the real deal and that makes him a force to be reckoned with.

Moonlight & Infinity

A pair of masked travellers that Isacaiah meets on her journey. Where they are from and what they are doing is a mystery, but they seem all to eager to involve themselves in Isacaiah's situation.

Some more words

This game was made in RPG Maker MV over the span of ~4 weeks and released for the Release Something Event (RSE) that coincided with the 31st birthday of the RPG Maker series. I really enjoyed making (and actually completing!) this game, so I hope that you guys will get some enjoyment out of playing my game as well.

The plan is that this will be the first in a series of games featuring characters and stories from all over the world of Aethera and beyond, but I admit that that is still very far away. For now, please enjoy this game!

I played this recently, found it by chance here first then saw it on the RPG Maker forums. I really enjoyed it, the mechanics were all balanced very well as others have said and the story kept me curious and interested. I think Infinity character could be expanded upon further, but otherwise very well done. Good job and thanks for this! :)

This game is really nice. It has good pacing the story is simple yet elegant. The Exp gain and damage output is really well balanced. The only thing I personally would have liked to see was the west side of the small town but that might also be because I became invested in the story. The characters all have nice designs and work really well in the simple story. I really am looking forward to a sequal of sorts. I am curious about the world and the mystery left hanging in the post credits scene.

The final boss was kindoff easy in my opinion but  every battle was still fun planning around the mp gain and loss.

Finally I would give this game a 8/10. Very well balanced fun battles and nice and simple but very short. I really am looking forward to seeing more games from you flame chicken sword lord. (amazing name btw)

I randomly ran across this game while surfing through the newest uploads and decided to give it a try. Here are my thoughts after playing through and finishing it, as someone who doesn't often play RPG Maker games:

  • The stat and skill progression felt extremely well-balanced to me. By fighting every monster I encountered, I always felt like I was just strong enough to handle the upcoming monsters. The new skills are introduced at times where they are useful (Piercing Lunge for high-defense scorpions, Shadow Walk when strong, charged physical attacks start becoming more common, etc.). I feel like this is something a lot of other RPG Maker games I've played tend to bungle or not execute as well, so it was really refreshing to play through a game that handles level progression nicely.
  • The visible enemy encounters on the field are so much better than the default random encounters. The fact that the enemies don't respawn allows the game to have a clear expectation of the player's level progression throughout.
  • The mapping is nicely done, with the floating island plains being my favorite maps in the game. The point in the forest where you walk off the east into a new room feels a little awkward because the whole aesthetic of the forest suddenly changes, but it still feels alright.
  • I mostly enjoyed the flow of the story; the fact that the game is short and simple fits well with only really having one mute party member for most of the game. This game works well as an introduction of sorts for future stories in this series, as well. One thing I do have to admit is that it feels a little awkward how none of the townspeople or guards seem to be interested in Gondroch being all suspicious just a short walk away from the town, but I don't really see how they could get involved and still have this game have its main focus be on Isacaiah and her journey, regardless.

Overall, I enjoyed my experience with this game, and I'm certainly interested to see what you do in the future with these characters. Well done on completing this game!
